A pH meter is a device designed to test a variety of substances including soil, water and food items. The make of the pH meter consists of two electrodes which are used for referencing and sensing hydrogen ions. One electrode detects changes in hydrogen ion voltage activity, while the other electrode provides a consistent voltage to compare to. Even when samples consist of the same substance, pH characteristics can vary. To prevent membrane-related issues, calibration of a pH meter against standardized buffers should be performed frequently.
