The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a U.S. government organization based in Maryland. They are the official keepers of calibration, holding the highest level of measurement accuracy in the United States. For example, if you wanted to see if your thermometer was up to calibrated standards, you could send it to the NIST. They would compare your thermometer against the best temperature standards and send it back to you with a report.
Of course, the NIST doesn’t directly calibrate the millions of measurement devices in the country. Besides, getting calibration services directly from the NIST is very expensive.
