The tooling or quality manager should plan on a one month lead time for scheduling on-site services. A list of all tooling and equipment that require calibration must be sent to the calibration lab. After review, the calibration technicians needed, work hour estimate, and pricing can be quoted. If there are only a few large pieces that need to be calibrated, it may only require the work of one technician for a few hours. Large lists or complex equipment may require multiple calibration technicians for 3 or more days.
Aircraft jack proof load testing, hydraulic power unit calibration, and cabin pressure unit calibration are the most common on-site aviation calibration services. Many MRO’s and FBO’s struggle to get aircraft maintenance done on schedule while these pieces of equipment are sent out for calibration or repair. Large, heavy pieces of equipment also have high shipping costs, which don’t apply for on-site calibration.
Not all calibration labs can provide on-site aviation calibration services. Ask your current provider if they offer on-site calibration. If you opt for on-site services, you get the added benefit of interacting with the technicians. Often times, the technician can offer insight on why pieces of equipment may be out of calibration. Calibration technicians may also provide tips on proper use or have the ability to perform small repairs right away on out of calibration equipment.
