When you send tooling out for calibration, it feels like it takes forever to get it shipped back. Waiting is an inconvenience, at best. At worst, being on standby can cause work delays and missed deadlines. What can you do to get tools back as quickly as possible so that you can get back to work?
Most organizations will have duplicates of the tools that are being sent for calibration. While it may be tempting to keep all tooling on the same interval (sending all tools at the beginning of the fiscal year for example), that can cause a bottleneck effect if calibrations take longer than expected.
Separating tooling into two groups, with alternating calibration intervals, can address this problem. In this scenario, half of the equipment is serviced while the other half is in use. This solution is a good fit for companies that have duplicates of equipment and have tool tracking down to a science.
For larger pieces of equipment or unique tooling, there may not be duplicate tools to use the alternating pattern mentioned above. Many calibration labs offer expedited shipping as a package or one-time service. Be prepared to spend a bit more if you choose either of these options.
The absolute fastest way to get equipment calibrated is by using an on-site calibration service. During on-site calibration, one or more technicians arrive to perform the calibrations. Many companies that request on-site service have all equipment calibrated that is due on or around the same interval. The majority of the calibrations are performed in a few hours, but service can last 2 – 3 days if there is a lot of equipment that requires calibration. An on-site fee is normally added to the calibration fee. On-site calibration service is a great solution for companies that have equipment that can’t be taken off site due to expense or necessity.
If a company uses a local calibration lab, they may have the option of pick-up and/or drop-off services. Calibrations labs that offer delivery usually charge a small fee (or even waive delivery fees) when providing this service to customers that are within 60 – 75 miles. By shortening total distance traveled, items sent to local calibration labs tend to have decreased turn-around times. Using a local calibration lab is often the best solution if available.
