WHY pH METER CALIBRATION IS NECESSARY

WHY pH METER CALIBRATION IS NECESSARY

A pH meter is a device designed to test a variety of substances including soil, water and food items. The make of the pH meter consists of two electrodes which are used for referencing and sensing hydrogen ions. One electrode detects changes in hydrogen ion voltage activity, while the other electrode provides a consistent voltage to compare to. Due to the sensitivity of pH measurements and the ever-changing characteristics of each substance tested, calibration of a pH meter is extremely necessary and beneficial. Calibration of this instrument should be performed regularly to ensure over accuracy and reliability of the device.

WHY pH METERS NEED TO BE CALIBRATED FREQUENTLY

There are a handful of reasons why a pH meter should be calibrated on a frequent basis, but the major reasons include the following:

pH CHARACTERISTICS CHANGE PERIODICALLY

The characteristics of pH are constantly changing. This is especially true when the pH meter’s start to show signs of aging and coating of their electrodes. By calibrating a pH meter frequently, aging and coating can be withheld. Calibration of a pH meter also aids in the matching pH characteristics between a meter and a sensor.

pH METER MEASUREMENTS DRIFT

Drifting of measurements is a common issue with pH meters. Although drifting itself can’t be prevented, the effects of drifting can be. Frequent calibration of a pH meter helps maintain reliable measurement results.

pH SAMPLE CHARACTERISTICS VARY

Even when samples consist of the same substance, pH characteristics can vary. To prevent membrane-related issues, calibration of a pH meter against standardized buffers should be performed frequently.

Due to the reoccurring changes pH endures, calibration is extremely important. pH affects the chemical nature of many substances, therefore, the correct measurements are crucial.
